Greece is home to more than 3 million stray animals. From the blinding white and blue of the Islands, through the vibrant streets of Athens, to the golden stones of the Acropolis. Stray cats curled on sun-warmed steps, roaming taverna terraces in search of their next meal, spending their entire lives without veterinary care or shelter. Ownerless dogs hide in quieter corners, the olive groves and hillside tracks, left to survive alone. But the countryside hideout is not free of danger: Every summer, wildfires tear through the country, consuming tens of thousands of hectares of land. In 2023 alone, more than 170,000 hectares burned, nearly twice the size of Berlin and larger than Greater London. Entire ecosystems collapse, and the bees that depend on Greece’s wildflower landscapes and ancient scrubland lose their habitat along with everything else. More than 20% of European bumblebee species are now at risk of extinction.
